A smart hardware-and-app system that guides beginners through a fuss-free, science-driven composting journey — turning food waste into valuable fertilizer for community gardens.
The Problem
Composting is a powerful way to convert household food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer that supports Singapore’s community gardens. Beyond reducing landfill waste, composting can bring residents together with a shared purpose — strengthening community bonds through sustainable gardening efforts.
Yet, for many beginners, composting feels complicated and overwhelming. Without prior experience, people often struggle with getting the right balance of materials, avoiding too much water, or preventing the bin from overheating. These challenges lead to failed composting attempts, unpleasant odors, and frustration — causing people to give up.
As a result, community gardens miss out on a valuable source of compost, and opportunities to build stronger, greener, and more connected neighborhoods are lost.
Our Solution
A smart hardware-and-app system that guides beginners through a fuss-free, science-driven composting journey — turning food waste into valuable fertilizer for community gardens.
binGo is designed to make composting easy, fun, and trackable for households and community gardens. By pairing affordable sensors with an intuitive app, it helps users avoid common composting mistakes and stay motivated through actionable guidance, gamification, and community features.
There is a gap:
Households want to reduce food waste and community gardens want to make composting bins, but composting often feels intimidating. Beginners face pitfalls like:
✅ Adding too much water or too little, leading to smells and slow breakdown
✅ Letting the bin overheat, killing beneficial microbes
✅ Struggling to know when and how to intervene
This results in failed composting attempts, frustration, and people giving up — missing a chance to support local gardens and reduce landfill waste.
binGo provides a supportive, science-backed process that helps users succeed from the start — while strengthening community gardening efforts and sustainability initiatives.
Core Workflow:
Set up bin → Monitor → Get real-time guidance → Harvest compost
Key Features:
🌱 Integrated Sensors: Monitor temperature, moisture, and bin fullness in real time
📲 Simple Actionable Instructions: The app translates data into clear, easy steps (e.g. “Add dry leaves” / “Turn pile today”)
📈 Data Visualisation: See trends in bin health and contributions over time
🎮 Gamification & Community: Track contributions, and see your impact alongside neighbors
📝 Educational Add-ons: Learn the science behind composting through optional deep dives
📍 Setup Guidance: Helps users choose the right bin size, location, and starter materials
🌿 Expandable System: Add multiple bins and manage them all through the app
